In 1090, during the reign of King Rufus, Burford was granted a Charter by the forward thinking Robert Fitzhammon. The Charter, and those that followed, were wide ranging not only granting rights for a weekly market but freeing the community from feudal ties.  In 1990 to celebrate 900 years since receiving this charter  Burford held a spectacular carnival with dozens of floats and processions filling the High Street culminating with a party on the recreation ground. This DVD, made and kindly donated to the Burford Tolsey by Maurice Eldridge, reminds us of this occasion. Incidentally it could be argued that Burford is the oldest "chartered" Town in Oxfordshire.
