'Half the wealth of England rides on the back of sheep' - Richard Martin

About the Event

“Half the wealth of England rides on the back of the sheep” is a well-known medieval saying, and all about the Cotswolds are vestiges of that wealth, including the glorious ‘wool churches’ (of which St. John the Baptist, Burford of course, is an example).

But how and why did that wealth arise, and what happened to it.

These are small questions, with big and very interesting answers… Which Richard Martin will attempt to supply.

Richard Martin read chemical engineering and then medieval and modern history at UCL, did various things(!), and has been weaving woollen cloth since 1976, first in West Wales, then in the Cotswolds and West Yorkshire. Currently he and his partner, Trish Poole, operate Cotswold Woollen Weavers in Filkins, and The Blanket Hall in Witney High Street. Both are open to the public every Wednesday to Saturday.
