About the Event
It is with pleasure and excitement that we announce the book launch reception for the ‘Treasures of the Burford Tolsey Museum’ will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 7th November at the Baptist Church, Burford, OX18 4SN. Admittance i s free of charge for all Benefactors of the Tolsey, but to assist us in catering, all Benefactors are asked to register their intention to attend, thank you.
This new look, lavishly illustrated book for all, with108 full colour pages, is the first to be published by the BTMA’s newly established Tolsey Press.  Once released it will be available to order from all booksellers and online, including Amazon, but it will be offered at a special price this evening, when you will be able to choose between  a hardback or a paper back edition. It will make a splendid Christmas stocking filler.
Encapsulated in over fifty treasures, the book showcases fascinating examples of the unique collection held by the Burford Tolsey Museum, one that chronicles the rich heritage of our ancient Cotswold town. Each treasure has a photograph and explanations of its use and origin. Many photographs capture the town as it was, alongside the same buildings today, so you can see how their appearances and uses have changed over time.
Since the museum opened in 1960, objects of direct relevance to the Town, dating across the centuries have been saved for posterity, many relatively unimportant on their own, but collectively, when brought together, provide a unique flavour of the bygone history of Burford and its community.
The descriptions of the featured items were compiled by Chris Walker, a remarkable local historian. Throughout his life, he dedicated much of his time and energy to acquiring objects of local historical interest. It was a delight to him to be able to share his carefully collected treasures in the Tolsey Museum for all to appreciate and enjoy.
This book is dedicated to his memory.
