These “insights” look onto a world governed by strict social categories, where people were legally defined as yeomen, gentlemen, lords, spinsters or widows, and where many others had no rights at all. It was a world of imprecise boundaries, curious land descriptions such as “yardland” and “close”, and rights to gather “estovers, furze and fewell” from the common.
