About the Event
Nestled at the gateway to the Cotswolds, Sheep Street has long been a quiet witness to Burford’s unfolding story. Once the main route into the town from the west, it is today a peaceful side road — but its stones still carry the echoes of centuries of change.
Laid out early in Burford’s medieval development, Sheep Street retains important glimpses of its past. A notable late‑medieval house still stands proudly, and another survives behind the façade of numbers 33–35. Most of the street’s buildings are later additions, including Greyhounds, that was once a temperance hotel.
The northern side is marked by substantial commercial frontages that grew from what were originally separate houses — among them the long range of The Lamb, Garnes Brewery, and the Bay Hotel. Together they form a lively architectural patchwork: shifting rooflines, patched stonework, altered windows and doors, each hinting at the layered stories within.
