Join us to explore how history frequently survives not as it was, but as it has endured. We know explorers roamed the seas because compasses remain in museums, but the sheepskin tanner whose pits were clay and whose tools were wood has largely vanished from memory. This talk argues that our picture of the past is really a picture of its durable objects, and what interested those few who could read and write.
It also turns the mirror on us: just as we judge earlier ages by our own standards, future centuries will judge our proudest achievements just as harshly, while, as Huizinga observed, we anyway cannot now understand what a warm bed or a hot drink truly meant to someone five hundred years ago.
